The Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary is a 611  acres (2.5  km² ) large reserve at the Buzzards Bay in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It is administered by the Massachusetts Audubon Society .

Protected area

The protected area includes different habitats such as beach areas, forests, open areas, swamps and the eponymous lake Allens Pond , which means that it has a correspondingly diverse flora and fauna. More than 300 different bird species live there, including the yellow-footed plover, which is classified as endangered by the IUCN . There are 7 mi (11.3  km ) of hiking trails  available to visitors, divided into three sections : Quansett Trail , Allen's Neck Trail, and Beach Loop Trail .

The South Coast Osprey Project is also located in the reserve . This program has been observing around 80 breeding pairs of ospreys every year since 2004 , which nest on specially provided platforms, the first of which were installed as early as 1965. The Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the more important breeding areas for ospreys in North America . Bird watching is important because ospreys are at the high end of the food chain in rivers, salt marshes and coastal waters. Their development is therefore an indicator of changes in the environment.

The management of the protected area also attaches great importance to environmental protection. Measures to save energy and water have been implemented in the buildings and a photovoltaic system generates 1.8 kW of electricity for its own use. Higher demands are covered by purchasing electricity generated exclusively from wind energy .
