All Saints' Day Flood 2006

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The All Saints Flood in 2006 was a storm surge on the German North Sea coast on November 1, 2006 ( All Saints' Day ), which caused damage in particular in East Friesland . The flood is one of the worst on the coast since 1906. People never died. Near the north , cattle were evacuated from the foreland of the dyke just in time.

The cause of the high tide was the hurricane "Britta" from the north-west, which, together with the tide, created a spring tide . The hurricane rushed over the North Sea with up to twelve Beaufort , the highest wind speed was measured on the island of Spiekeroog (156 km / h). Borkum The highest water level was since the 1962 storm surge recorded in Emden and the (time closed) Emssperrwerk in Gandersum even the highest ever measured values of all: In Emden, the water rose to 3.59 meters above mean high tide (MHT) in Gandersum at 3.90 m above MThw. In Bensersiel, 2.91 meters above sea level were reached, the third highest water level after the storm surges of 1906 and 1962.

Damage was caused in Emden in the sections of the port located outside the dike . The Fährreederei AG Ems building was flooded . At Neuharlingersiel , a 30-meter-long landing craft was lifted out of the harbor basin by the force of the water and after the flood was almost 100 meters inland in a parking lot. Several boats were destroyed in the Norddeich marina . On the East Frisian Islands , the storm surge caused considerable dune breaks .

In the port of Hamburg , the hurricane tore a ship from the quay, which was secured again with tugs. An approximately 100 meter long coaster got into distress off Borkum after the steering gear failed. The Norwegian oil rig "Bredford Dolphin" was torn from its tug at sea. In both cases, no people were harmed.
