The Allgemeine Zeitung des Judentums (AZJ), which until May 1903 was the Allgemeine Zeitung des Judenthums , was a German Jewish newspaper that appeared from May 2, 1837 to 1922, initially in Leipzig and later in Berlin . Its subtitle was an impartial organ for all Jewish interests in the subject of politics, religion, literature, history, linguistics and fiction (with royal Saxon most gracious concession.) , From 1845 an impartial organ in spelling . It initially appeared twice a week, later weekly. It became the most successful Jewish magazine in Germany.

The AZJ was founded on May 1, 1837 in Leipzig by Rabbi Ludwig Philippson , who published it in the publishing house of Baumgärtner's bookstore in Leipzig until his death in 1889. The newspaper was published by Gustav Karpeles from 1890 to 1909, and since 1890 by Rudolf Mosse in Berlin; a regular writer during these years was Saul Raphael Landau . From 1909 to 1919 the editorship was in the hands of Ludwig Geiger , then Albert Katz. Other well-known employees in the first few years were Gabriel Riesser , Eljakim Carmoly , Joseph Levin Saalschütz , Samuel David Luzzatto , Leopold Zunz , Leopold Dukes , Julius Fürst , Leopold Löw , Franz Delitzsch , Adolph Jellinek , Abraham Geiger and Isaak Markus Jost . Phöbus Moses Philippson , brother of the editor, contributed eleven articles to the journal in the first year of the AZJ under the title Ideas for an Encyclopedia and Methodology of Jewish Theology .

The first issue (May 2, 1883) contained news (“Politics”) as well as the first part of the publisher's treatise “What is Judenthum?” And in the “Fiction” section Israelitische Lebensbilder .

In number 41 of July 27, 1837, a declaration appeared on the newspaper's program (“On the principles of editorial work”), in which the newspaper spoke out in favor of the bourgeois emancipation of the Jews and a clear presentation of Jewish positions: “We have to develop our religion To assert the institutions of antiquity, we have to break the heavy fetters of restriction, prejudice and hatred ”.

Since 1853 the AZJ contained a regular supplement under the title Jüdisches Volksblatt for instruction and entertainment in the Jewish field .

The last issue of the newspaper appeared on April 28, 1922. It was replaced by the CV newspaper of the Central Association of German Citizens of the Jewish Faith, which was also published by Rudolf Mosse .

The Internet archive of Jewish periodicals Compact Memory contains almost the entire inventory of the journal.

Today's Jüdische Allgemeine sees itself standing in the tradition of the AZJ .
