Eljakim Carmoly
Eljakim David Carmoly (actually Goschel David Behr ; born August 5, 1802 in Sulz , France ; died February 15, 1875 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a French-Jewish scholar and literary historian.
Life
Carmoly studied Hebrew and Talmudic Studies in Colmar . Then he went to Paris . There he was busy with old Hebrew manuscripts in the national library , where he had got a job. Several publications made him known in the professional world.
When a Jewish Central Council was formed in Belgium, he was appointed rabbi to Brussels on May 18, 1832 . In this position he was involved in social issues. Among other things, he supported schools for the poor. After seven years, he resigned and went back to Paris and in 1839 to Frankfurt. There he devoted himself to researching Jewish literature.
