Allium melitense is a plant of the genus Allium from the family of Amaryllidaceae family (Amaryllidaceae). The species isnativeto Malta only.
description
Allium melitense is a perennial bulb plant that can grow to a height of 30 centimeters. The leaves are grooved. They bloom from spring to summer. The inflorescence is approximately spherical and usually has a diameter of up to 3 centimeters. The numerous flowers are purple-violet and egg-shaped, the bracts are keeled.
distribution
Allium melitense is native to Malta only , where it inhabits rocky steppes and valley slopes. The type is common.
Systematics and botanical history
The species was first described in 1927 (after a first, invalid suggestion in 1915) as a variety of field garlic ( Allium ampeloprasum ), but in 1950 it was established as a separate species by Raffaele Ciferri and Valerio Giacomini .
