Allyn Johnson

Allyn Johnson (* around 1975 in Washington, DC ) is an American jazz musician ( piano , composition ) of modern jazz .

Live and act

Allyn Johnson began playing the piano at the age of five; from an early age he was a pianist for the youth choir in his uncle's parish. He was preparing for medical school at George Washington University College . When he heard the pianist Dwayne Adell , he changed his mind. He graduated from the University of the District of Columbia ; his mentor was Calvin Jones . At UDC, Johnson was one of the earliest winners of the Felix , a jazz performance scholarship . After completing his studies with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies in 1997 with honors ( magna cum laude ), he taught for six years as adjunct professor and deputy head of the Jazz Studies department ; after Calvin Jones' death he became its director in 2005.

The first jazz recordings were made in Washington in 1996 with Sunny Sumter, Steve Wilson and George Colligan ( Getting To Know You ); in the following years he also worked with Andrew White , the Thad Wilson Jazz Orchestra, Tim Green, Reginald Cyntje, Marcus Printup ( Young Bloods , 2014) and Christian Winther . In 2005 he founded the Divine Order ensemble , in which he brings styles such as gospel , jazz and classical music together. He also worked with the Sonic Sanctuary formation , with his own trio and ensemble, stylistically oriented between straight-ahead jazz , fusion and funk . In the field of jazz he was involved in 20 recording sessions between 1996 and 2017.
