Almauftrieb
As Almauftrieb , Alpaufzug or Alpfahrt , transhumance bringing of grazing livestock grazing on mountain, known is Almen designated. It's a form of cattle drive .
Up until the middle of the 20th century, the cattle drive was combined with sometimes several days' marches for cattle and shepherds. Depending on the area, large bells and trichles were hung around the cows . In contrast to the cattle drive (alpine descent) the animals were not festively decorated.
In Austria today, animals are usually transported to the alpine pastures by cattle trucks.
In the Bernese Oberland and central Switzerland , cattle are still herded into the Alps on foot in many places. The spectacular alpine lift up to the Engstligenalp is well known , with around 500 head of cattle being driven up on foot on a mule path through the rock face next to the Engstligen Falls, overcoming 600 meters in altitude in a good hour.
In the Swiss Appenzellerland and Toggenburg , the alpine journey is maintained as a festive custom to this day. The procession has a traditional structure: first the goat boy, then the goats driven by a girl in costume. Then the herdsman follows in full Appenzell herdsman costume with yellow lederhosen and a slung milking bucket with a richly painted floor at the head of the cattle. Behind the Zusenn cattle, also in traditional alpine costume, and three men in Appenzell Sunday costumes with brown trousers. Behind the cattle follows the farmer, also in Sunday costume, accompanied by his Appenzell mountain dog . Another assistant may follow with the bull on the nose ring. The end is made by a carter with the “Ledi”, a wagon on which all the necessary equipment for cheese production is tied. This alpine journey is a popular motif of the Appenzell and Toggenburg Senntumsmalerei .
In the Swiss canton of Friborg the alpine lift is called "Poya". The poya is also a custom that is still cultivated today, in Estavannens even a folk festival, and a frequent representation of the local peasant painting.
A special alpine lift is the Altmühltaler lamb lift . Traditionally, the large herd of sheep, lambs and goats has been herded through the Bavarian market Mörnsheim to the summer pasture for years . The flock of sheep is usually led by a prominent politician, among others the Bavarian Prime Ministers Günther Beckstein and Horst Seehofer have already led the raising of lamb.
