Almuth Berger
Almuth Berger , b. Brennecke (born April 29, 1943 in Tangermünde , Stendal district , Saxony province ) is a German pastor. Under Hans Modrow and Lothar de Maizière she was the commissioner for foreigners of the German Democratic Republic .
Life
Almuth Berger grew up as the daughter of theologians in Jerichow ( Genthin district ) and later in Berlin. From 1961 to 1966 she studied Protestant theology at the Humboldt University in Berlin . From 1976 to 1985 she was pastor of the St. Michaelis Congregation in Magdeburg and from April 1, 1986 to March 31, 1991 of the St. Bartholomew Congregation in Berlin .
Since 1976 she has been active in the peace work of the Federation of Evangelical Churches in the GDR . She took part in the Magdeburg Peace Sundays and was a co-founder of the Magdeburg Circle “Women for Peace”. Since 1986 she has been active in foreign work and has been involved in the first meeting place for residents and foreigners "Cabana" in the St. Bartholomew Community in Berlin. Since 2001 she has been a member of the INKOTA-netzwerk advisory board .
From 1987 she worked in the working group “Rejection of Practice and the Principle of Demarcation”, from which in autumn 1989 the citizens' movement Democracy Now arose. In 1989/90 Berger was a delegate from Democracy Now in the working group on foreigner issues at the central round table . Since March 1990, she has been State Secretary and Commissioner for Foreigners in the Modrow and de Maizière governments. In 1991, she was appointed as the foreigner commissioner of the state of Brandenburg . She held this office until she retired in October 2006.
Almuth Berger was married to the theologian Christfried Berger, who died in 2003 . She has three daughters and lives in Berlin-Schmöckwitz .
