Alois Gügler

Joseph Heinrich Alois Gügler (also: Joseph Heinrich Aloysius Gügler ; born August 25, 1782 in Udligenswil ; † February 18, 1827 in Lucerne ) was a Swiss Catholic theologian. One of his main works, the Christian aesthetic The Sacred Art or the Art of the Hebrews , is concerned with the distinction between Christian and non-Christian art.

Life

Alois Gügler was the son of a farmer and went to school in Einsiedeln . He later lived in Petershausen , he studied in Solothurn and Lucerne . In 1802 he completed his theology studies with Johann Michael Sailer in Landshut . He became a professor for the Old and New Testaments at the higher education institute in Lucerne. In 1805 he was ordained a priest . From 1806 to 1819 he was also a professor of pastoral theology .

As a young man, Gügler admired the philosopher and theologian Johann Gottfried Herder . Later Gügler was influenced by German idealism and German romanticism . He connected his theology to the philosophy and literature of his time.
