Alois Hergouth

Alois Hergouth (born May 31, 1925 in Graz , † January 17, 2002 there ) was an Austrian writer , poet and translator.

Life

Alois Hergouth was born on May 31, 1925 as the eleventh child of a bricklayer and a housewife in Graz. He graduated from high school in 1943 and was a soldier in Dresden during World War II . After a long stay in a labor camp and a prisoner of war, he returned to his hometown Graz in autumn 1945.

In 1946 he published poems in the volume Confession to Austria in Grazer daily newspapers and in Otto Basils literary magazine Der Plan . Seven years later his first volume of poetry, Neon und Psyche (1953), was published. He had interrupted his studies in ethnology, general and comparative linguistics and the history of religion from 1947 to 1953. In the following years he worked as assistant to Viktor Geramb and was mainly involved in the founding of the Grazer Forum Stadtpark and the literary magazine manuskripte .

In 1959 he found a second home in Sladka gora , Slovenia . Hergouth lived there in a secluded mud hut in the vineyards. This period is described and processed in the volume of poetry Sladka gora , written in 1965 .

Between 1960 and 1963, after completing his doctorate, he worked as an assistant to Hanns Koren at the Institute for Folklore at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz . The poet was a member of the PEN , the IG authors and the Austrian Writers' Association . For health reasons, Alois Hergouth retired in 1978 and devoted himself to his writing activities in the following years. In addition to various volumes of poetry, the prose volume Der Mond im Apfelgarten was published. In 1999 he received the academic title of professor . Hergouth died on January 17th, 2002 at the age of 77.
