Alois Kraut (* 1957 in Klagenfurt ) is an Austrian diplomat .

Alois Kraut attended the federal high school for Slovenes in Klagenfurt and studied law at the University of Salzburg with a doctorate in 1983. After a court year and diplomatic academy in Vienna , he entered the diplomatic service in 1988. He was posted to the United Nations  Development Aid Office (UNDP) in Kigali, Rwanda , as a Junior Professional Officer . In 1989 he was employed at the Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs  (BMaA) in Vienna for development aid, legal and consular sections, international organizations, from 1991 as attaché for press and culture at the embassy in Mexico City (Mexico) . In 1993 he became deputy head of mission in Belgrade (Serbia) and then in 1996 in Pretoria (South Africa) . From 1999 Kraut worked again in Vienna, in the department for Eastern and Southeastern Europe and as head of the department for transport and telecommunications. During this time he led the Austrian delegation to bilateral air traffic negotiations.

In 2007, Kraut was appointed ambassador to the Republic of Macedonia in Skopje . The country has been a candidate for EU membership since 2005 and is a focus of Austrian Development Cooperation  (ADC). There he was most recently doyen of the diplomatic corps. From November 2011 Kraut was temporarily employed as deputy head of the Permanent Mission of Austria to the United Nations in Vienna . In February 2012 he was appointed ad interim Chargé d'affaires for the Republic of Uzbekistan with an embassy seat at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Vienna. August 2012 the office of ambassador for the Republic of Armenia was added, which is still located in Vienna as a representation that is currently being set up. The Caucasus region will become a new focus of Austrian diplomacy.
