Alonso Manso (* 1460 in Becerril de Campos , Spain , † September 27, 1539 in San Juan , Puerto Rico ) was a Spanish bishop .

Life

He studied theology at the University of Salamanca . He then became the canon of Salamanca and chaplain to Prince Don Juan. On November 15, 1504 he was appointed bishop of the diocese of Magua in the Dominican Republic , which had only existed for six years . On August 8, 1511, Pope Julius II established three dioceses in the New World , two of them in Hispaniola ( Santo Domingo and Concepción de la Vega ) and one in San Juan , the capital of Puerto Rico, whereupon Manso became bishop of the Puerto Rican Diocese was appointed. He received his episcopal ordination from the Archbishop of Seville , Diego de Deza . Before arriving on the island, he founded the first school for advanced studies on September 26, 1512. When he arrived in 1512, he was the first bishop in the New World. In 1519, the diocese of Puerto Rico was expanded to include all of the Leeward Islands by order of the bishop . In the same year Manso became the first Grand Inquisitor of the East Indies . Two years later he led the construction of the Cathedral of San Juan, which was completely destroyed by a hurricane in 1539, shortly after his death .

Bishop Manso got involved in politics, as was the custom of his time. He became the eighth governor of Puerto Rico (tenth by official counts, but the first incumbent, Vicente Yáñez Pinzón , never arrived on the island and Juan Ponce de León held office twice as No. 2 and No. 6) . Manso was replaced a year later by his predecessor Pedro Moreno (governor) .

The bishop initiated many things in the New World. Not only did he establish the first school for advanced studies, but he also carried out the first episcopal consecration in the New World when he consecrated the elected Bishop of Santo Domingo, Sebastián Ramírez de Arellano , in the Cathedral of San Juan in 1529 . He also founded two hospitals, namely Concepción (the first hospital in Puerto Rico) and San Ildefonso. Manso died in San Juan in 1539 at the age of 79. He was succeeded as Bishop of Puerto Rico in 1541 by Rodrigo de Bastidas y Rodriguez de Romera .
