Alonzo Judson Abbey

Alonzo Judson Abbey (also: AJ Abbey; born March 1, 1825 in Olive Township, Ulster County , New York , United States ; † March 24, 1887 in Chester, Morris County , New Jersey , United States) was an American musician , Music teacher, composer and music publisher.

Life

Alonzo Judson Abbey's parents were David and Nancy Abbey. He had a brother, Horatio Gates Abbey (1818–1879), who also wrote song texts. AJ Abbey taught music for a number of years. He taught singing classes in Sunday schools such as 1873 in Carbondale, Pennsylvania. He also worked as a music publisher. He wrote texts and melodies for hymns.

On February 23, 1848 he married Margaret Rutledge, born on May 13, 1829. Their child Frances C. Abbey was born on July 16, 1850, and Flora J. Abbey on September 22, 1855. On December 14, 1862, he married Mary Elizabeth Topping, born on September 2, 1838. With her he had six children, George Topping Abbey, Mary Farnham Abbey, William Bradbury Abbey, Jarties Edward Abbey, Ida Haines Abbey and Charles Evert Abbey. He died on May 24, 1887 in Chester, where he was buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery .

Cooling

As a cooling , a melody composed by Alonzo Judson Abbey in 1868 is common in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was underlaid with many different texts and so included in many hymnbooks in different versions.
