Alphacetylmethadol ( INN ) or α-acetylmethadol (AAM) is a fully synthetic opioid - analgesic . It is not to be confused with acetylmethadol . Its levorotatory enantiomer levacetylmethadol has not been marketed in the EU since 2003; in the USA it is still an FDA- approved drug for the treatment of opioid addiction . Alphacetylmethadol has a very similar chemical structure to methadone , which is also a commonly prescribed drug for treating opioid addiction.

Effects

Because alphacetylmethadol, unlike levacetylmethdaol, was almost never marketed, there are hardly any pharmacological data on the product . In the PubChem chemical database , it is described as a narcotic analgesic with a slow increase in activity and a long duration of action. AAM produces heroin-like effects in rats at a comparatively lower concentration. However, it should be noted here that alphacetylmethadol is not chemically identical to methadone, nor to the parent substance acetylmethadol or its isomer, levacetylmethadol, and that different pharmacological effects can result from a different molecular structure.

Legal status

In Germany, alphacetylmethadol is listed in Appendix 1 to the Narcotics Act. It is considered a non-marketable narcotic and can therefore not be prescribed.
