occupation

When Santa Claus fell from the sky is a Christmas film by the Augsburger Puppenkiste from 2017 . It is based on the children's book of the same name by Cornelia Funke . Directed by Martin Stefaniak , who had adapted the book for the stage ten years earlier, with Julian Köberer . The film is the third cinema production by the Augsburger Puppenkiste. It was released in cinemas on December 3rd and was shown on all Advent weekends.

action

Shortly before Christmas, Santa Claus Niklas Julebukk crashes his caravan in a thunderstorm and has to make an emergency landing in the neighborhood of the children Ben and Charlotte. Julebukk is on the run with the goblins, flybeard and goatee, the reindeer shooting star and the angel Matilda from the evil Santa Claus Waldemar Wichteltod and his nutcracker soldiers. Wichteltod has brought the country of Christmas under its control and wants to ensure that only the most expensive Christmas gifts are delivered in order to maximize the profit of the Christmas season. The children's wishes are no longer taken into account. Together with Ben and Charlotte, Niklas Julebukk manages to defeat Wichteltod and save the magic of Christmas.

production

In 2007, Martin Stefaniak adapted the novel as a puppet show for the Augsburger Puppenkiste. In 2016, the Augsburger Puppenkiste brought a Christmas film to the cinema for the first time, The Christmas Story , which tells the biblical Christmas story. This film became such a success that the puppet theater decided to produce a Christmas film again the following year. With the play When Santa Claus fell from the sky, a modern Christmas story was to be told this time. Martin Stefaniak directed the film together with Julian Köberer and composed the film music. The duo Vivid Curls wrote the song Snowflake Night for the film .

The film was shot over six days in May 2017. Since the theater stage of the Augsburger Puppenkiste was too small for the camera work of a cinema production, the puppet theater moved to the hall of a former balloon factory in Augsburg for the shooting. The Augsburg professional fire brigade assisted the film team for one scene .

The film started on the first weekend in Advent in 400 cinemas in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

reception

The jury of the German Film and Media Assessment FBW described the film as “enchantingly nostalgic Christmas cinema, which will not only give the youngest viewers a lot of joy before Christmas” and awarded the title “valuable”.

The FBW youth film jury rated the film 3.5 out of 5 stars and highlighted the lovingly made marionettes and stage sets. The theater succeeded in apparently bringing the puppets to life and creating a Christmas atmosphere.

DVD and radio play

When Santa fell from the sky was released on DVD in November 2018 .

The film was accompanied by a radio play production with Martina Gedeck as the narrator.
