Alta is a place in Salt Lake County in the US state of Utah . Alta is a well-known ski area and is visited by up to 500,000 tourists annually.

history

The town of Alta was founded in 1870 after miners first settled in the region around 1865 to mine silver in silver mines. The core of the settlement was destroyed in a major fire in 1878, but the large silver deposits helped the place to be rebuilt quickly and the mine owners to great wealth over many years. After a Scandinavian publicized the place for skiing in winter, the first ski lift was built in 1938. Since then, winter sports tourism has been the main economic factor in Alta with around 500,000 visitors.
