The Altair was a former fish logger that was used by the Luftwaffe as an auxiliary air traffic control ship in the Second World War and then by the Navy as a security boat.

Construction and technical data

The sailing logger Altair (AE 56) ran in May 1922 with hull number 341 at the Jos shipyard . L. Meyer in Papenburg from the stack . The owner was the Dollart AG herring fishery in Emden . The ship was 30.06 m long and 7.05 m wide, had a draft of 3.20-3.32 m and was measured with 172.60 GRT and 79.76 NRT . It had an (auxiliary) steam engine of 100 HP from Christiansen & Meyer. The ship was used in the North Sea and the North Atlantic in the herring fishery .

history

Air Force Ship

The ship was requisitioned by the Luftwaffe on April 17, 1940 and assigned as an auxiliary air traffic control ship to the Luftzeuggruppe See in Kiel . From May 27, 1940, it served at the Sea Emergency District Office (SNB) III and was stationed in Wilhelmshaven .

On April 26, 1941, the ship was transferred to the Navy and assigned to the blocking command in Kiel. On July 1, 1942, it joined the Pomeranian Coast Guard Flotilla as an auxiliary warship DPK 14 . When this was renamed the 2nd Safety Flotilla on October 1, 1943, the ship was given the new designation outpost safety boat VS 216 .

post war period

On September 23, 1945, the ship was returned to its pre-war owners. In 1950 it was given a 240 hp diesel engine from MWM , and on December 14, 1950, when the Dollart herring fishery and the Großer Kurfürst Heringsfischerei AG merged in Emden, the latter was acquired.

The ship was sold for demolition in November 1962.
