Mehmet Altan Öymen (born June 20, 1932 in Trabzon ) is a Turkish journalist and politician .

Life

The family moved to Ankara , where Öymen attended elementary and middle school. Altan Öymen has a brother and a sister. The politician Onur Öymen is his cousin.

Altan Öymen studied at the Political Science Faculty of Ankara University . He completed his studies in 1955. As a journalist he worked for numerous major daily newspapers in Turkey, including Tercüman , Cumhuriyet , Radikal and Akşam . He was editor-in-chief at Milliyet .

From 1962 to 1966 he lived in Bonn and worked as a press attaché for the Turkish embassy. In 1972 he founded the ANKA news agency , which he ran until 1979.

Altan Öymen was a member of the Turkish parliament for the Republican People's Party (CHP) on several occasions . In 1977 he was briefly tourism minister under Bülent Ecevit , then deputy group leader of the CHP.

In 1995 Öymen was re-elected to parliament and served there again as deputy group leader of his group. In May 1999 he took over the chairmanship of the Republican People's Party for 15 months at a special party conference.

Altan wrote various books. He is married to Aysel Öymen and has two children.
