Onur Öymen (born October 18, 1940 in Istanbul ) is a Turkish diplomat , politician and political scientist .

Life

Öymen attended elementary, middle and high school at Galatasaray High School . He studied political science and did his PhD with a thesis on technological development and defense policy. From 1964 he worked for the Turkish Foreign Ministry. From 1964 to 1966 he did his military service. From 1966 to 1968 he worked for NATO , then he worked at the Council of Europe . A deployment in Cyprus followed . In 1974 he became Undersecretary of State at the Turkish Embassy in Nicosia in Cyprus. In 1978 he became a special advisor to the Turkish Foreign Minister, and from 1979 he held a leading position in the Ministry of Economic Affairs. Öymen was then again active in the diplomatic service and from 1980 worked as Undersecretary at the Turkish Embassy in Prague in Czechoslovakia (ČSSR) and from 1982 at the Embassy in Madrid in Spain . In 1984 he was back in Ankara as head of a political investigation department . In 1985 he took over a political planning department.

In 1988 he became the Turkish ambassador in Copenhagen in Denmark and then in 1990 in Bonn in Germany . In 1995 he returned to Turkey and took on the role of Undersecretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1997 he was Turkey's representative to NATO. In 2002 he retired from active service. In addition to Turkish , Öymen also speaks German , English , French and Spanish .

Öymen is a member of the social democratic party Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi (CHP), of which he was initially deputy chairman for the Istanbul area from 2002 to 2007. From 2003 to May 2010 he was deputy chairman of the entire party. From 2007 to June 2011 he was also party leader in Bursa .
