description

The old love south side

The structure was first erected in 1733 when three disused ships were sunk at this point. The ships were surrounded with stakes and the spaces between them were filled with stones and bushes. The aim was to fortify the port, which had been damaged by storm surges, and to secure the large beacon that marked the port entrance at the time.

The old love later served as a pier and was regularly renewed. In 1982 the structure was converted into a pure viewing platform. At the same time, the ailing wooden piles of the substructure were replaced by a reinforced concrete structure. Above it is now a two-story wooden pile building, from whose gallery visitors can watch the navigation on the Lower Elbe. From April to October, visitors are informed about the size and origin of the passing ships via a loudspeaker system every day between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. The ship announcement service Cuxhaven e.
