Old weights and measures (Scotland)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Scotland , despite the English rule, local units were preserved for a long time , also in Ireland , but not in Wales. The names of the dimensions are partly identical and their sizes are also the same, but there are also considerable differences.

length

Scottish measures of length
inch inch ≈ 25.54 mm = 2.554 cm
foot foot 12 inch ≈ 306.45 mm = 3.0645 dm
ell Cubit 37 inch ≈ 945 mm = 9.45 dm
case 6 ell = 18½ feet ≈ 5.669 m ( meters )
mile mile 320 case ≈ 1.8142 km

Feet and inches were only slightly higher in Scotland than in England , where the little Elle and case was not widespread. The Scottish mile is significantly larger than the English country miles and is almost the length of a nautical mile (1.852 km). The 37 inch King David's cubit was used (in tailoring) throughout Scotland from the 12th to the 19th centuries, but there were local variations up to 41  inches .

volume

Scottish liquid measures
gill ¼ mutchkin ≈ 107.661 ml ≈ 1.08 dl
mutchkin ½ chopin ≈ 430.6644 ml ≈ 4.31 dl
chopin ½ pint ≈ 861.3288 ml ≈ 8.61 dl
pint pint ⅛ gallon ≈ 1.7226576 l ( liter )
gallon gallon 827.23 in³ ≈ 13.781261 l ≈ 1.378 dal

Only the gill is similar in size to its English counterpart (142 ml, US: 118 ml). The Scottish pints and gallons are around three times the size of the English ones (568 ml and 4.55 l). The others, mutchkin and chopin , did not exist in the south of the island.
