The Alte Post (also: Alte Hauptpost ) in Saarbrücken is the former post office of the state capital . The building is a listed building as a single monument.

history

The building was built in 1928/29 as the service building of the Oberpostdirektion for the Saar area and the main post office of the city of Saarbrücken. The designs come from the architect Ludwig Nobis based on a floor plan by W. Hausmann. At the same time a post station and post tracks were built. After the Saar area was reintegrated into the German Reich on March 1, 1935, the building became the headquarters of the Saarbruecken Oberpostdirektion.

After the construction of a new post office on a neighboring property, the building stood empty from the mid-1980s and fell into disrepair. In 2001, Saarbrücken-based Munitor AG acquired the flat roof construction and began renovating it in 2012 for 20 million euros in order to rent out 10,000 square meters of office space. The post office was completely gutted, the facade was preserved. From November 2013, the Saarland Ministry of Education should move in here for at least 5 years on 8,500 m². However, due to structural delays, the move had to be postponed. The move finally took place from April 11-13, 2014. On the ground floor there is a 800 m² restaurant which for a long time belonged to the system catering chain L'Osteria , which also uses the space in front of the post office with outdoor seating.

architecture

The acute-angled U-shaped building at the intersection of Trierer Strasse and St. Johanner Strasse consists of a reinforced concrete skeleton lined with bricks . The architectural decoration made of brown-blue iron clinker bricks from the Birkenfeld clay and brick works on the upper floor and on the arches on the ground floor and the ribbon windows below the flat roof are no longer there. The southern corner of the building is designed as a tower-like projection. Mighty round arches form the entrance to the vestibule. The arches continue on the facade in the entire ground floor as blind arches in which large round arched windows sit.
