Old Synagogue (Limburg an der Lahn)
The Old Synagogue in Limburg an der Lahn , the district town of the Limburg-Weilburg district in Hesse , was built in 1903. The synagogue was at Untere Schiede 27.
history
The synagogue was built according to plans by the architect Wilhelm Spahr from Marburg . It had 201 places for men and 104 for women. A mikvah was built to the right of the synagogue building. Above the entrance to the synagogue was the inscription from Psalm 118: “This is the gate of the Lord. The righteous pull in through it ”.
During the November pogrom in 1938 , the synagogue was set on fire by SS men. The fire ruins were removed and the property rebuilt.
Commemoration
In 1981 a memorial plaque was placed on the site of the former synagogue . In 2015 it was removed and replaced with a bronze model of the synagogue. The memorial plaque was given to the Jewish community.
