Altendorf is part of the Altenberga community in the Saale-Holzland district in Thuringia .

geography

Altendorf is about 500 m after the start of the side valley from the Saale valley that runs towards the west and extends beyond Altenberga. The federal highway 88 from Rudolstadt to Jena and also the railway line Saalfeld - Jena pass the front door of the village. The place in this valley is surrounded by limestone slopes. This location has a positive effect on the climate in spring and autumn because it extends the growing season.

history

In the immediate vicinity of the intersection B 88 / L 2309, scientists from the Department of Prehistory at the University of Jena excavated a station for late Ice Age hunters, the first archaeological Magdalenian excavation in Thuringia in 40 years. The proximity to other important sites from the same time approx. 15,000 years ago suggests that the area was populated very early.

Altendorf was first mentioned in a document on March 14, 1228. A noble farm belonging to the von Aldindorfe family was first mentioned in 1389. He belonged to the burgrave Altenberga. The hall church of St. Maria was built in the 14th century, in 1517 in its current, late Gothic form. An organ was added during the baroque period. In 1613 the place was hit hard by the Thuringian Flood .

The predominantly agricultural place, with expropriations during the Soviet occupation zone and collectivization in the GDR , merged with farmers from other places in an agricultural cooperative after German reunification .

Altendorf had about 250 inhabitants in 2012.
