Old Guild House (Dunfermline)
The Dunfermline Old Guild House is located in the Scottish town of Dunfermline in the Council Area Fife . In 1971, the building was included as an individual monument in the Scottish list of monuments in the highest monument category A.
history
The old guild house was built between 1805 and 1811 as a guild house and trading center for fabrics. The Scottish architect Archibald Elliot is responsible for the design . However, the use lasted only a short time. As early as 1817, the building housed the Hotel Spire Inn . After renovations, the county of Fife used the old guild house as a council building from 1850. The Sheriff Court was also located there. From 1993 it was used as a location for the public employment service.
description
The old guild house stands in a prominent position where Guildhall Street joins the High Street in the center of Dunfermline. The classicistic , three-story corner house has an L-shaped floor plan. The sandstone masonry is rusticated on the ground floor . The north-facing main facade along the High Street is seven axes wide. The two-winged main portal with a window on the central risalit is simply pilastrated and closes with Doric entablature . Arched windows are installed on the ground floor and the risalits , while elongated, six or twelve-part lattice windows are used along the other facades . On the first floor they close architraves and are simply crowned . The facade along Guildhall Street is designed analogously. The final hipped roof of the old guild house is covered with gray slate.
A prominent, four-story tower rises up from the risalits, which is a landmark. It tapers gradually and is octagonal from the third section . The lower sections are pilastrated and divided by cornices . Four tower clocks are embedded in the third section. Above it sits an Ionic rotunda that ends in a pointed helmet.
