Old warehouse (Münsingen)
The old warehouse in Münsingen in the district of Reutlingen in Baden-Württemberg is one since 1996 under monument protection standing former army quarter of the Empire of the late 19th century.
history
The former military training area of the XIII. The Royal Württemberg Army Corps was established in the Swabian Alb in 1895 . The crew , lieutenants ' and officers' barracks built at that time , the provisions depot and the officers' dining establishment have remained almost unchanged in their external appearance to this day.
A museum has been set up in the former post office building of the old camp . There you will find information about the eventful history of the former military training area, starting with the German Empire , the First World War , the Weimar Republic , the Third Reich , the Second World War , the French occupation and the Federal Republic of Germany .
In both world wars, prisoners of war were housed in the old camp. After the Second World War, French troops were stationed in the old camp for decades , and from 1957 the German Bundeswehr was also allowed to perform maneuvers. On August 1, 1992, it was handed over to the Bundeswehr.
The Münsingen military training area was closed at the end of 2005.
Todays use
The old camp is currently not freely accessible. Guided tours are possible by appointment or on certain dates.
On October 23, 2010, the information center for the Swabian Alb biosphere area was opened in the old camp . The old guard and a staff building were connected by a steel-glass frame construction. In addition to the offices of the biosphere area and the Geopark Schwäbische Alb eV association and rooms for seminars and group work, an exhibition area of around 450 square meters was created. In the interactive exhibition, visitors can find out more about the biosphere reserves worldwide, the adjacent former military training area in Münsingen, the local forests, beekeeping , grazing and urban-rural relationships in the region.
The Nürtingen-Geislingen University of Economics and Environment and the Stuttgart Media University also use rooms in the old warehouse.
On November 1, 2015, the old warehouse was privatized through sale and is now operated and managed by the Albgut company.
