The so-called Old Castle is a fortified mansion in the Freiburg district of Lehen on Bundschuhstrasse about 60 meters south of the baroque church of St. Cyriak . The oldest historical evidence is from 1478.

history

In addition to the proven mention of "Curtis zu Leheim" from 1478, when Jakob Widergrün von Staufenberg received the village fief together with the Weiherhaus from Archduke Sigismund as an Austrian fief, it is likely that a house from 1427 also refers to it there was Herzog Frederick of Austria gave Heinrich Banger from Freiburg to fiefdom with court and Geseß. Who built the moated castle is incomprehensible. It is likely that it originates from the post-Zahringian period, as no local nobility was formed in the 11th and 12th centuries. After the Widergrüns, the castle was owned by Balthasar von Blumeneck, during whose time the Bundschuh fell into a fiefdom in 1513 . In the list of houses destroyed in the Peasants' War in 1525, the moated castle is probably listed as the house of the widow Balthasar von Blumenecks. The successors of the Blumenecks, the von Stadion family, sold the village, palace and castle stables to the city of Freiburg for 24,000 guilders in 1587. The ditches, ponds and a fron and protective courtyard with newly built stone dwellings are also mentioned in the sales deed . This courtyard still exists today and is known as Hof zu tutsch . After it was sold to the city in 1587, the village was administered by the city. The Weiherschlösschen is described in the list of houses from 1863 as uninhabitable and as a high-rise . After the repair, it was the accommodation of the town hunter in fiefdom. The Lehener Schlösschen was sold to a private person in 1870 and is still inhabited and privately owned today.

description

At first glance it looks like a baroque building thanks to the window frames, the full hipped roof and its three window axes. However, the three-storey building with its tower-like structure suggests that the structure is much older. Another indication is that the eastern part of the building is more massive, about as it would be necessary for a tower with the size of 10 × 10 meters. Above the door there is a shield showing the coats of arms of Freiburg and Upper Austria.

The fortification existed in the complex as a deep or water castle. The water from a triple arm flowed around the manor house, which probably stood slightly elevated on a small island as a foothill of the Lehen mountain. Access to this facility, which was surrounded by a closed wall, was via a bridge on the north side.
