Aluminum (I) oxide is a chemical compound of aluminum from the group of oxides .

Extraction and presentation

Aluminum (I) oxide can be obtained by reacting aluminum oxide with aluminum or silicon at 1800 ° C. It is also formed when it reacts with carbon at high temperatures and thus influences the production of aluminum in the Hall-Héroult process .

properties

Aluminum (I) oxide is only stable as a gas at temperatures between 1050 ° C and 1600 ° C and breaks down again into aluminum and aluminum oxide at temperatures below 1000 ° C. Under certain conditions the existence of a solid phase with a cubic crystal structure is also assumed, with other sources attributing this to the formation of other compounds such as Al 4 C 3 by reaction with impurities.
