Alyson Bailes

Alyson JK Bailes (born April 6, 1949 in Manchester ; † April 29, 2016 ) was a visiting professor at the University of Iceland in Reykjavík and director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

Alyson Bailes studied history at Oxford ( Somerville College ) and entered the diplomatic service in 1970 .

She worked in Hungary , Germany , China , Norway and Finland . For the British government, she led negotiations with NATO and the European Union . She was Vice President of the New York East-West Institute and political director of the Western European Union Defense Alliance in Brussels .

From November 2000 to June 2002 she was the British Ambassador to Finland.

From July 2002 to August 2007 she was Director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). After her time in Stockholm, she moved to the University of Iceland in Reykjavík in 2007 , where she held a position as visiting professor.
