Amedeo Peyron
Vittorio Amedeo Peyron , the first name also in the form of the name Amadeo (born October 2, 1785 in Turin , † April 27, 1870 ibid) was an Italian orientalist and linguist .
Professional career
Since 1815 Peyron was active at the University of Turin as a professor for oriental languages. In his area of expertise, he was particularly concerned with research into the Coptic language . His work on this language soon gave him an international reputation, with his Coptic dictionary and a grammar of the Coptic language, which he published after years of research, established and consolidated his fame in this field of research. Peyron also achieved great merit through the publication of papyri from the Turin and Vienna collections as well as through his palimpsest research , during which he discovered previously unknown fragments of the works of Cicero , Empedocles and Parmenides as well as the Codex Theodosianus .
Honors
- Peyron was a member of the Turin Academy of Sciences.
- Since 1820 he was a corresponding member of the Bavarian and since 1836 of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .
- On May 31, 1865 he was accepted as a foreign member of the Prussian Order Pour le Mérite for science and the arts.
- Peyron was u. a. Knight of the Legion of Honor and Knight of the Order of the Crown of Italy ( cavaliere di gran croce dell'Ordine della Corona d'Italia ).
