Amandus Schickmayr

Amandus Schickmayr (born March 19, 1716 in Grieskirchen , † February 23, 1794 in Lambach ) was an Austrian Benedictine and from 1746 to 1794 abbot of Lambach Abbey .

Life

Schickmayr was born in 1716 at Parz Castle near Grieskirchen. He graduated from the Lyceum in Linz and entered Lambach Abbey in 1731. He then studied philosophy in Graz and the St. Lambrecht Abbey and theology in Salzburg . In 1735 he was promoted to Dr. phil. doctorate and ordained a priest in 1739. Afterwards he was active in pastoral care and entrusted with various monastery offices. As a novice master , he was elected abbot in 1746 and the Prince Bishop of Passau benediziert .

During his reign the monastery experienced a cultural heyday, but like most Austrian monasteries it was closed in 1784 as part of Josephinism . The abbot, who was appointed state administrator, and the monks could stay in the monastery, but the church silver had to be delivered and many properties had to be sold. The collegiate church became a parish church in 1785. In 1788 the abbot was reinstated in his office. He celebrated his golden jubilee as a priest in 1789 and died as a senior monastery in 1794.
