Ambassis urotaenia is a fish from the family of the glass perch (Ambassidae) which is widespread in the coastal Indo-Pacific. Its distribution area extends from the islands of the western Indian Ocean ( Madagascar , Seychelles and Réunion ) over the coasts of India to the Philippines , Fiji and the Carolines , north to Sagami Bay in central Japan . The species is absent on the coast of East Africa.

Ambassis urotaenia becomes 14 cm long. The body height is 35.1 to 39% of the standard length , the head length 34.1 to 38.8 % of the standard length. The mouth is strong above. The body is transparent and silvery to smoky gray. There is a silver band running down the middle of the sides of the body. The underside of the head, the membrane between the second and third dorsal fin rays, the edges of the scales on the back and the bases of the dorsal and anal fin are black. Both lobes of the forked caudal fin each have a yellow stripe. The sideline is continuous. The rear edge of the praeoperculare is serrated in very large specimens, otherwise smooth, the interoperculare is smooth in fish that are smaller than 6 cm, with larger ones there are 2 to 7 thin spines.

Way of life

Ambassis urotaenia lives in brackish water areas in lagoons and near estuaries and mangroves , sometimes it also migrates to the upper reaches of rivers. The species is swarm-forming.
