Ambiliates

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ambiliaten ( Latin Ambiliati ) was a Gallic Celtic tribe who settled south of the mouth of the Loire in the Atlantic Ocean .

At Caesar ( De bello Gallico 3, 9) the tribe is defeated in the winter war of 57/56 BC. Counted among the allies of the Venetians , together with the Osismians , Lexovians , Namneten , Morinern , Diablinten and Menapiern . Also in Caesar ( de bello gallico 7, 75) and in Orosius ( Historiae adversum Paganos 6, 8, 8) the tribal name is read as Ambivaritos or Ambivareti, sometimes also as Ambianos . Again in the Venetian contingent, they were part of the Gallic relief army at Alesia .
