Ambrogio Buonvicino

Ambrogio Buonvicino (* around 1552 in Milan , † July 1622 in Rome ) was an Italian sculptor of Mannerism .

Life

He was initially a student of Pietro Antichi . Around 1581 Buonvicino came to Rome, where he learned from Prospero Bresciano . In the following years he worked on behalf of Popes Sixtus V and Paul V, among others . His most famous works include the relief of the handover of the keys below the Benediction loggia of St. Peter's Basilica and the tomb for Pope Urban VII in the church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva . He also gained popularity through his depictions of angels .

Giovanni Baglione dedicated a vita to him in his work Le Vite de 'pittori, scultori, et architetti , published in 1644 .
