Amelie is the German or non-French spelling of the French name Amélie [ameˈliː] . The older form of the name, derived from Middle High German, is Amalie , with the minor form Amelia , and is derived from Old Norse "aml" with the meaning "hard work, hard work, pushing ahead, driving ahead". In the literature, the meaning is sometimes given in abbreviated form as "proficiency".
