The American Platinum Eagle is an official US platinum coin in the currency US dollar . The coin is one of the investment coins .

The first Platinum Eagles were released by the United States Mint in 1997 . They are available in fine weights of 110 , ¼, ½ and 1 troy ounce . The US Mint guarantees that the coins contain the specified amount (in ounces) of ".9995 fine platinum".

For coin collectors, "Proof" quality coins are issued. The specialty of these Proof American Platinum Eagles is that they are the only investment coins in the USA that have a differently designed reverse every year.

Executions

size diameter thickness Weight Face value
110 ounce 16.5 mm 0.95 mm 3.112 g $ 10
¼ ounce 22.0 mm 1.32 mm 7.780 g $ 25
½ ounce 27.0 mm 1.75 mm 15.560 g $ 50
1 ounce 32.7 mm 2.39 mm 31.120 g $ 100

Note: The design of the 1/10, 1/4, 1/2, and 1-ounce Platinum Eagles is identical except for the imprinted weight and face value. Although the market value of the Platinum Eagles, as is customary with investment coins, is well above the face value due to the pure metal value, these coins are theoretically an official means of payment.

Reverse sides of the polished plate issues

Since 1998, the collector's editions in the quality proof have a differently designed back every year. The motif is always a bald eagle , which is depicted against the background of different regions of the United States or in connection with another USA-specific theme.
