Presidential dollar

Value side of the presidential dollar

President dollars ( english officially Presidential $ 1 Coin ), the coins worth one US dollar mentioned that from 2007 to 2016 as part of a series issued and gradually the portraits of all (late) President of the United States represent.

Output program

The program began in 2007. Every three months, another coin appeared with a portrait of a president on its face, in the order of the terms of office, starting with George Washington . Here, Grover Cleveland same mapped to two coins: As his two terms are not contiguous, it counts both as 22 and as the 24th President of the United States.

A stack of presidential dollars

The value side shows the Statue of Liberty , the value $ 1 and the country name United States of America . The marginal inscription includes the year of issue, the mint mark and the mottos E Pluribus Unum and In God We Trust . The otherwise existing on American coins legend "Liberty" ( "Freedom") , is missing because it is already represented by the image of the Statue of Liberty. On the coins minted since 2009, the motto In God We Trust is no longer on the edge, but on the face.

The issue of the coins was passed by law (Presidential $ 1 Coin Act of 2005) with the aim of increasing the circulation of one-dollar coins compared to one-dollar bills. Since the State Quarters program was well received by the population, it is hoped that the presidential series will increase the popularity of this coin value.

Unlike the State Quarters, this program does not replace the regular spending, the Sacagawea dollar . It was originally determined that at least one third of all dollar coins minted must be Sacagawea dollars. A change in the law in 2007 reduced this proportion to a fifth.

The law states that a president must be dead for at least two years before he can be honored on a coin. Since no other incumbent or past president died until 2014, the 2016 program ended with a coin for Ronald Reagan .

"First Spouse" program

The presidential wives were also honored on commemorative coins , namely on ten dollar gold coins. The coin is made from ½ ounce of 999 gold. These coins were issued in parallel with the presidential dollars. The law uses the gender-neutral designation “First Spouse” instead of “ First Lady ” because a man could have moved into the White House as the “first spouse” by the end of the program .

Director of the United States Mint , Edmund C. Moy and First Lady Laura Bush at the unveiling of Dolley Madison commemorative coin on 19 November 2007

On the face of the coin is a portrait of the First Lady, her name, her husband's tenure, and the slogans "In God We Trust" and "Liberty". On the back is a scene featuring her husband's work and life. There are also the words: "The United States of America", "E Pluribus Unum", "$ 10", "1/2 oz." and ".9999 Fine Gold".

If a president such as Thomas Jefferson did not have a spouse, an image of the Liberty of a coin of the time was used. An exception is suffragette Alice Paul , who represents the time of Chester A. Arthur's widowhood .

The law stipulates that the spouses' coins appear together with the respective president. Thus it would have been possible for a living person to be depicted on the coin.

The United States Mint also makes duplicates in bronze. However, these are not official means of payment.
