aims

The main goal of AUCA is to train new leaders for the young Central Asian states through academic education. In addition, values such as freedom and justice, as well as the search for truth and the critical handling of things should be conveyed in order to promote the development of the region.

history

After the Central Asian states gained independence in 1991, rapid development took place in the region, which was also associated with greater engagement by the USA. In this context, the Kyrgyz-American school was established in 1993 as part of the Kyrgyz state national university. The institution enjoyed great popularity and was no longer sustainable under the umbrella of the national university, so that in 1997 it became an independent American University in Kyrgyzstan by presidential decree. The university also enjoyed international recognition and attracted a very international student body . In order to emphasize the international ambition of the university and its importance for the region, it was renamed the American University of Central Asia in 2002. In 2008, the AUCA entered into a cooperation with the American Bart College. In 2011 the Institute for Central Asian Studies was launched to support the study of the region in which the university is located.

campus

Old AUCA campus

The construction of a new campus is currently on the home stretch. The new campus should enable digital and contemporary education and justify AUCA's claim to be an internationally recognized university. The new building is co-financed by the United States Agency for International Development and the Open Society Foundation of billionaire George Soros . So far, the AUCA has been housed in a building from the 1930s that used to be the seat of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Kyrgyz SSR .

Library

The AUCA has a library with more than 75,000 books, as well as numerous magazines, videos and CDs.
