American Art of the 20th Century (Exhibition)

American Art of the 20th Century was an exhibition that took place from May 8 to July 25, 1993 in the Martin-Gropius-Bau in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg . On display were 252 paintings and sculptures by 66 artists, which were supposed to document the rise of American modernism and its detachment from European art. The starting point was the legendary Armory Show of 1913 in New York with pictures by Marsden Hartley and Stuart Davis . A special place in the atrium of the museum was given a. a. the sculptures ofDavid Smith and the work Mural (1943) by Jackson Pollock on a six meter long canvas.

The exhibition was also on view from September 16 to December 12, 1993 at the Royal Academy of Arts in London .
