Amfipoli ( Greek Αμφίπολη ( f. Sg. )) Is a village in the municipality of Amfipoli in the Greek region of Central Macedonia . Together with Nea Amfipoli, it forms one of four local communities in the municipality of Amfipoli . The village is named after the ancient Greek city of Amphipolis . Finds from the excavations are presented in the Amfipoli Archaeological Museum .

location

The village of Amfipoli is located on the lower reaches of the Strymonas, west of a bend in the river just before it flows into the Aegean Sea . The hamlet of Nea Amfipoli about 2 km south on national road 2 and immediately west of the junction with national road 59 . With 20.367 km² Amfipoli is the smallest local community in the municipality. The municipality of Visaltia borders in the northwest and the region of East Macedonia and Thrace with the municipality of Pangeo in the southeast .

Administrative division

After it was incorporated into the then rural community of Paleokomi in 1920, Amfipoli was spun off again in 1952 and raised to a rural community. The recognition of Nea Amfipoli took place in 1961 as Agios Nikolaos, the renaming took place in 1965. Together with three other rural communities, Amfipoli was merged with the territorial reform of 1997 to form what was then the municipality of Amfipoli . Since the administrative reform in 2010 , the former rural community has the status of a local community in Amfipoli .

Amfipoli station is on the Thessaloniki – Alexandroupoli railway line, which opened in 1896 .
