Ami Assaf

Ami Assaf (birth name: Ami Vilkovitz ; Hebrew עמי אסף; * July 22, 1903 in Rosh Pina , Galilee ; † May 17, 1963 in Petach Tikwa ) was an Israeli politician who was elected as a member of the first Knesset in 1949 and remained a member until his death.

Life

After primary school in Rosh Pina, Assaf attended the Hebrew Herzlia-Gymnasium in Tel Aviv-Jaffa and then worked in agriculture . He was one of the founders of the village of Kfar Yashoua and in 1936 Secretary of the Moshav appointed movement, a cooperative organized settlement movement in the League of Nations Mandate of Palestine . He was also a member of the Central Committee of the Labor Party ( Mapai ).

After the establishment of the State of Israel, Assaf was elected for the first time as a member of the Knesset on February 14, 1949, and was a member of this until his death on May 17, 1963. During his membership in parliament he was a member of various Knesset committees.

Most recently he was Vice Minister for Education and Culture in the cabinet of Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion from November 1959 until his death .
