The Hebrew Herzlia-Gymnasium ( Hebrew הגימנסיה העברית הרצליה HaGymnasia HaIvrit Herzliya , also known as Gymnasia Herzliya , Herzliya-Gymnasium ), originally HaGymnasia HaIvrit (Hebrew High School), is a traditional high school in Tel Aviv .
history
The school was founded on October 22nd, 1905 in Jaffa, then Ottoman . The foundation stone for the new school building in Herzl-Straße in Ahuzat Bayit was laid on July 28, 1909. This was the city's first Hebrew grammar school. The building was designed by the engineer and architect Joseph Barski and the artist Boris Schatz in the Moorish style ; these were inspired by descriptions of Solomon's temple. The building was an important landmark of Tel Aviv until 1962; that year the building was demolished for the construction of the Shalom Meir Tower . The demolition of the school was followed by widespread attention to the importance of preserving historic landmarks. The Society for the Preservation of Israeli Heritage was founded in 1980 in part in response to the fate of the Herzliya Hebrew High School.
At its current location on Jabotinsky Strasse, it serves as a six-year secondary school . The modern campus is entered through a gate that is a cast iron replica of the facade of the 1909 building; the gate was installed in 2006 and financed by donations.
