from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Amin Sameh Samir Fahmy (often also listed in the short form Sameh Fahmy ; Arabic سامح فهمي, DMG Sāmiḥ Fahmī ; * August 14, 1949 in Cairo ) is an Egyptian politician .

Life

Fahmy studied chemical engineering at Cairo University until 1973 . In 1973 he was hired by the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) with his twin brother Hady . In November 1985, Amin Sameh Samir Fahmy was entrusted with the investment planning of EGPC. From November 1987 he examined projects for their economic feasibility. From January to December 1988 he studied regional planning as a fellow with a scholarship at the Nasser Military Academy.

In 1997 he was vice chairman of the Middle East Oil Refinery (MIDOR) and from 1998 he headed the planning department of the Ministry of Natural Resources, of which he became deputy director in 1999. Amin Sameh Samir Fahmy was Minister for Natural Resources in the Abaid Cabinet from October 5, 1999 to July 9, 2004 and in the Nazif Cabinet from July 9, 2004 to January 29, 2011 . Under his aegis , the Egyptian natural gas reserves, including those of RWE , were exploited for Egyptian needs.

Fahmy initially retained his ministerial office in the Schafiq cabinet (still set up by Mubarak) , but left the government at the end of February 2011 - when the Schafiq cabinet was reorganized. He was initially (briefly) replaced by Mahmoud Latif Amer , who had previously been the head of the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS). Mahmound Latif Amer kept the new ministerial post only for a short time. When the entire Shafiq cabinet resigned in early March 2011 and Essam Sharaf formed a new cabinet on March 3, 2011 , he appointed Abdullah Ghorab as the new Minister for Oil and Natural Resources.

After the fall of Hosni Mubarak, Fahmy was charged. On June 28, 2012, a Cairo court sentenced him to fifteen years in prison. The criminal court found it proven that he had wasted more than $ 714 million in public money in connection with a gas deal with Israel.
