Amirali Alibhai "Amir" Bhatia, Baron Bhatia , OBE (born March 18, 1932 ) is a British businessman , politician and life peer .

life and career

Bhatia was born on March 18, 1932 in East Africa as an Ismaili Muslim , the son of Alibhai Bhatia and his wife Fatima. He has a brother. Bhatia attended schools in Tanzania and India . He attended The Scindia School in Gwalior from 1944 to 1948, where he last held the function of School Prefect .

Bhatia joined the family business in Tanzania and founded the first production facility of razor blades in East Africa, in collaboration with the Commonwealth Development Corporation and the Tanzanian government between 1960 and 1970. Bhatia moved in 1971 his residence to the United Kingdom .

He bought the UK portion of Forbes Campbell Group , a commercial bank primarily active in the export and fundraising sectors, and expanded the company with offices in New York City , Toronto , Singapore and Bahrain .

Later he turned more to education and worked in the administration of 55 schools in Tanzania. He ran an extensive scholarship program .

He worked from 1980 to 2001 Chairman ( Chairman ) and Managing Director of Forbes Campbell International Ltd . From 1985 to 2001 he was Chairman and Managing Director of Casey Finance Ltd . In 1998 he became chairman ( Chairman ) of SITPRO Ltd. , the British agency to facilitate trade.

He is Chairman ( Chair ) and co-founder of the Ethnic Minority Foundation and the Board of Directors ( Council ) of the Ethnic Minority Voluntary Sector Organizations (CEMVO) and former member of the Trusteeship Council ( trustee ) of various charities , including the Charities Board of National Lottery and Oxfam are where he Chairman ( Chairman ) of Oxfam Trading was. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of Oxfam UK for over 12 years and is (as of 2002) a member of the Board of Directors of Oxfam India .

He also supported the Labor Party financially.

Membership in the House of Lords

On June 5, 2001 , at the suggestion of Tony Blair , he was appointed Life Peer as Baron Bhatia, of Hampton in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames . It was officially launched on July 9, 2001. He is one of the first people's peers . In the House of Lords , he sat as CROSSBENCHER . He gave his inaugural address on July 23, 2001.

He mentions the states of Africa , Bangladesh , India , the Middle East , Pakistan and Sri Lanka as states of particular interest . From 2002 to 2003 he was a member of the Religious Offences Committee .

Despite the high attendance rate, he only took part in around 15% of the votes. Bhatia registered regularly on the attendance register, but without actually doing any significant parliamentary work. According to the Sunday Times in July 2009, he had not spoken to the House of Lords for over four years by then.

In October 2010, Bhatia was suspended for eight months by the House of Lords in connection with the UK Parliament expenses scandal . Bhatia had listed an apartment in Reigate , Surrey , which he had originally bought for his brother, as their primary residence on the grounds that he and his wife wanted to move to a smaller apartment. This apartment was only fifteen miles from his actual home in Hampton , west London, but it was above the limit for lodging allowances. The Commission of Inquiry of the House of Lords found in its report that Bhatia had never put his main London residence up for sale. Bhatia has now reimbursed £ 27,000 in expenses. He was suspended simultaneously with Pola Uddin, Baroness Uddin and Swraj Paul, Baron Paul . Since his suspension, he is as an Independent ( Independent performed).

On April 21, 2016, Lord Bhatia was again suspended by the House of Lords for 8 months. This time because he had double his travel expenses of £ 756 .

Awards

In 1997, Bhatia became Officer of the Order of the British Empire .

In 2001 he was honored with the UK Charity Award as Personality of the Year. He was honored with the 2002 Madhav Award from The Scindia School . In 2003, Bhatia was awarded the prestigious Beacon Fellowship Prize for leadership in the fight against social disadvantage and exclusion in and outside the UK. He was elected Chair of the Fellowship of the other award winners .

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts .

He has been married to Nurbanu Amersi Kanji since 1954 and has three daughters.
