description

Vegetative characteristics

Amitostigma simplex is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 5 to 14 centimeters and grows terrestrially . It forms egg-shaped, almost spherical tubers with a diameter of 4 to 5 millimeters. The slender, smooth stem has two tubular leaf sheaths near its base and a single, basal leaf above . The 1.0 to 2.5 centimeter long petiole coats the stem. The simple, herbaceous leaf blade is 1.5 to 4.0 centimeters long and 3 to 6 millimeters wide, oblong-elliptical with a pointed or blunt upper end.

Generative characteristics

The inflorescence standing on a leafless inflorescence stem contains only one upright flower. The lanceolate wrapper with a length of 6 to 10 millimeters is almost as long as the ovary .

The flower stalk and ovary is 8 to 9 millimeters long. The hermaphrodite flower is zygomorphic and threefold. The yellow and slightly brown dotted, dorsal sepal is 3.8 to 6.0 millimeters long and 1.3 to 3.0 millimeters wide with a blunt upper end. The two lateral sepals are semi-sickle-shaped, 4.2 to 8.0 millimeters long and 1.5 to 5.0 millimeters wide. The petals are 3.7 to 5.5 millimeters long and 1.8 to 4.0 millimeters wide and obliquely oval. The three-lobed lip is approximately egg-shaped with a length of 1.0 to 1.5 centimeters. The two side lobes are oblong-inverted-egg-shaped with a width of up to 9.0 millimeters; the middle lobe is up to 1.0 centimeter wide, deeply incised at the upper end and slightly wavy at the edge. The spur is cylindrical with a length of 3 to 4 millimeters and a diameter of 1.0 to 1.3 millimeters.

Occurrence and endangerment

The natural range of Amitostigma simplex is in China. The species thrives on grassy slopes at altitudes between 2300 and 4400 meters in western Sichuan and northwestern Yunnan .

Amitostigma simplex is “endangered” according to the IUCN Red List . Amitostigma simplex is listed in CITES Appendix II to avoid trade worldwide.

Taxonomy

It was first described in 1940 by Tsin Tang and Fa Tsuan Wang in Bulletin of the Fan Memorial Institute of Biology , Volume 10, p. 25. According to R. Govaerts, it is known as Ponerorchis simplex (Tang & FTWang) XHJin, Schuit. & WTJin in the genus Ponerorchis .
