Amnon Yariv

Amnon Yariv (born April 13, 1930 in Tel Aviv ) is an Israeli professor of applied physics and electrical engineering at the California Institute of Technology . There he deals with the development of semiconductor lasers and other light sources, photonic crystals , optical storage media, WDM filters and the like. a.

biography

After serving in the Israeli army, Yariv began studying electrical engineering at the Technion in Haifa in September 1950 .

In early 1951 he moved to the USA and began studying at San Mateo Junior College, but after one semester he switched to the University of California, Berkeley . There he achieved the degrees of Bachelor of Science 1954, Master of Science 1956 and Ph.D. 1958.

From 1959 he worked at Bell Laboratories . In 1964 he finally switched to Caltech and has been a professor there since 1966.

Yariv is a co-founder of Ortel Corporation (founded in 1979, taken over by Lucent in 2000 ) and Orbits Lightwave Inc. (founded in 1999).
