Amos J. Hochstein (born January 4, 1973 in Israel ) is an American diplomat and expert on national security and the energy industry . He was a member of the Naftogaz Board of Directors until October 2020 and has been Senior Energy Security Advisor at the United States Department of State since August 2021, with responsibility for policy on the German-Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline .

Life

As a child of Jewish-American parents Hochstein was born in Israel and grew up there. From 1992 to 1995 he did military service in the Israel Defense Forces .

Hochstein worked for the US Congress, testified there and served in the Obama administration under Secretary of State Clinton and Kerry . In 2011 he was appointed Special Envoy and Coordinator for International Energy Affairs.

After the change of government, Hochstein left the civil service and began working in March 2017 as Senior Vice President Marketing for Tellurian, a privately owned LNG company based in Houston ; he left the company in September 2020. Hochstein is a board member of the Atlantic Council and the US-India Business Council. Hochstein resigned from his role as the supervisory board of the Ukrainian Naftogaz in October 2020 by publishing an opinion piece.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced Hochstein's appointment as senior advisor on energy security on August 10, 2021 . Hochstein is responsible for “reducing the risks” of the German-Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 . Blinken said Hochstein's appeal underscored the US government's determination to prevent Russia from using its energy supplies as a geopolitical weapon.

Hochstein is married to Julie Rae Ringel. You have four children and live in Washington, DC He describes himself as a Modern Orthodox .
