Antony Blink
Antony John "Tony" Blinken (born April 16, 1962 in New York City ) is an American diplomat and politician ( Democratic Party ). He has been the United States Secretary of State in the Biden Cabinet since January 26, 2021 .
Life
Blinken spent the first years of his life in New York, where he lived on the Upper East Side with his Jewish-American parents Donald and Judith Blinken . There he attended the private Dalton School. After his parents separated, he moved to Paris with his mother and switched to the bilingual École Jeannine Manuel. He speaks French fluently and with almost no accent. The close relationship with his stepfather Samuel Pisar , a Holocaust survivor, author, star lawyer and advisor to President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing , was to have a lasting impact on him. His studies took him back to the US, where after he basic studies onHarvard College , Columbia Law School and Harvard University earned degrees in law and political science.
He worked in lower positions for the Bill Clinton administration and was a contributor to the Center for Strategic and International Studies . He also held several government offices for the Barack Obama's government. Between 2009 and 2013 he was National Security Advisor to Vice President Joe Biden . He can also be seen as this in the iconic Situation Room photo , which shows senior members of the Obama administration being briefed on the progress of Operation Neptune's Spear , in which Osama bin Laden was killed by a US Navy special unit in Pakistan . He then served as Deputy Security Advisor to the President and Vice Secretary of State of the United States .
After Donald Trump took over the presidency , Blinken left the civil service. Since then he has taught at the University of Chicago, among others, and has appeared as a commentator and analyst for the New York Times and CNN . He was Foreign Policy Advisor for Joe Biden's 2020 presidential candidacy. In November 2020, Joe Biden nominated Blinken as Secretary of State to his cabinet. On January 26, 2021, he was confirmed by the US Senate with 78 votes to 22 and took up his post as Secretary of State. Blinken embodies the US return to multilateralism . In the hearing before his confirmation by the Senate, he promised to strengthen relations with traditional allies such as the EU states and to rely on international organizations and agreements.
