Amphichaetodon is a species of butterfly fish (Chaetodon) withonly two species. The Lord Howe butterflyfish ( Amphichaetodon howensis ) occurs from subtropical Eastern Australia to Lord Howe Island , the other species, Amphichaetodon melbae , is only found around the small volcanic island of San Félix off the coast of Chile.

Amphichaetodon species grow to be 11 to 18 centimeters long. They are tall, their snouts are short. The basic color is silvery-white with wide black transverse bands in Amphichaetodon howensis and only half as narrow stripes in Amphichaetodon melbae .

Systematics

Amphichaetodon is the sister group of a clade of Coradion , Chelmonops and Chelmon .

Way of life

The two amphichaetodon species occur in subtropical and cold waters in which the water temperature is between 12 and 20 ° C. They feed on small invertebrates like flea crabs , shrimp, and worms. During the breeding season, the fish appear in pairs. Young fish live in schools.
