Ja soschla s uma (Russian Я сошла с ума; German “I've lost my mind”) is a song by the vocal duo tATu and at the same time their first single. It was released on December 19, 2000 in Russia and had great success there. Although the song was released only twelve days before the end of the year, it reached number 89 on the Russian year-end charts. In total, the piece occupied the top position on the radio charts for four and a half months.

Emergence

The lyrics to the song were written by Jelena Kiper and Valeri Poljenko, while Sergio Galoyan composed the music. Five different text versions of the song were made before the demo recordings began. In one of these early drafts the words "Ja soschla s uma" appeared in the chorus. Kiper says these words came to her mind after waking up from anesthesia at the dentist. According to his own statement, Ivan Schapovalov added the words “Mne nuschna ona” (German I need them ) and finally decided on this text version.

Shortly before the start of the video shoot, Shapovalov's financier, IT entrepreneur Boris Renski, asked to cancel the tATu project because he did not believe that the duo would be successful. Schapovalov managed to change Renski's mind and persuade him to pay a final sum of $ 35,000 so that the music video could still be shot and the single released.

publication

On December 19, Ja soschla s uma had its radio premiere and was released as a single in Russia at the same time . In addition to the song, it also contained four remixes and two music videos, one of which was a remix video. The accompanying music video was released on MTV Russia the same day . National and local Russian radio stations played the song a total of 10,000 times. The single sold over 50,000 copies within Russia and an estimated 200,000 copies as a black copy . For 18 weeks, Ja soschla s uma was number one in the Russian single charts. The single was also successful outside of Russia, especially in Eastern Europe. In October 2001 it was officially published in the Czech Republic , Bulgaria and Slovakia after it had already been distributed there as an illegal black copy. On the day of publication, it jumped to number one on the charts of the Bulgarian youth broadcaster MM-Channel. It also rose to number one in the Polish radio airplay charts, reached number 18 in the Czech Top 50 charts and number eight in the Latvian Top 30 charts.

In the late summer of 2002, the English version of the song ( All the Things She Said ) was released across Europe and was a great commercial success in the years that followed.

Music video

The success of the song, with which tATu achieved great fame in Eastern Europe, was largely supported by the controversial music video for the song. The then underage singers Julija Wolkowa and Jelena Katina kiss while wearing Catholic school uniforms, while a crowd watches them in amazement and horror. People whisper and shake their heads, depicting the prejudice and discriminatory treatment of homosexuals . At the end of the video, the two protagonists walk hand in hand and walk towards a sunrise, which can be interpreted as a symbolic act of liberation from oppression by society.

The video shoot took place on a disused runway in the Chodynka field in Moscow and cost between 25,000 and 30,000 US dollars, according to the director Ivan Shapovalov. The scenes showing the crowd through the fence and also showing motor vehicle traffic in the background were filmed on Kutuzov Prospect . Filming began on September 4, 2000 and lasted for several days. In order to adapt the two singers according to his ideas, Shapowalow had Katina lose 10 kilograms and Wolkova dyed her actually blonde hair black, and both girls used tanning cream.

MTV Russia, which can also be received in many non-Russian countries, broadcast the video 35 times a week at the height of popularity, and the national music channel MUZ-TV 20 times a week during the same period. For both music channels, this was an extraordinarily high value at the time. Although there were initial concerns that the video clip might be boycotted or censored, the music video was played too often by the music networks, according to tATu's manager, producer and video director at the time, Ivan Shapovalov . A making-of was later also published via MTV Russia.

Prices

In Russia, the song and music video have received numerous awards, such as the “100 Pound Hit Award” from the radio station Hit FM. The award ceremony took place in the prestigious State Kremlin Palace in Moscow. In New York City , tATu were honored for the music video for the piece and received the award for the best Russian music video of the year ( Viewer Choice Best Russian Video ) at the MTV Video Music Awards . The result was achieved through an audience vote.

more publishments

There are a large number of remix versions of the song, which can be found on the single itself or the remix album tATu Remixes . For Ja soschla s uma - DJ Ram Remix and Ja soschla s uma - HarDrum Remix , own remix videos were produced, which were also often broadcast by various music channels.

The song was remixed for the English-language debut album. The vocals from the Russian original version were put on the rockier instrumental from All the Things She Said . This version was intended for the western music market and can also be found on the single for All the Things She Said and the compilation album tATu The Best . However, Eastern European and Russian radios played and still play almost exclusively the original version of the song from 2000, which is much more popular.
